The appointment of Jaya Verma Sinha as the first woman CEO and chairperson of the railway board is indeed historic. It is truly a turning point in the 166-year history of the Indian Railways.
She assumed office on September 1, 2023, with an extended re-employment period from October 1, 2023, to August 31, 2024. Mrs. Verma will continue to hold this position until his official retirement.
Sinha, an Allahabad University alumnus, joined the Indian Railway Traffic Service in 1988 and served on the Northern, South-East, and Eastern railways. She is currently employed with the Ministry of Railways as a Member of Operations and Business Development, Railway Board. Additionally, Sinha is in charge of managing all Indian Railways’ passenger as well as freight operations.
Nonetheless, Mrs Sinha has worked with Indian Railways for almost 35 years and has experience in a variety of fields, including operations, business, information technology, and vigilance.
It is to be noted that the famous Maitri Express, which operated between Kolkata and Dhaka, began its services during her tenure in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
With a distinguished career with the Indian Railways, Sinha has demonstrated his abilities as a great leader with an understanding of business development and operations. She has made remarkable efforts and shown a strong dedication to the development of the railroad business.
The Indian Railways’ fundamental institution, the railway board, has been in operation for more than 118 years after being founded in 1905. Sinha is the first woman to hold this crucial position in the company’s history. She was chosen for the position based on her background as an experienced officer who has accrued experience working on several postings in an enormous organization.
Her nomination highlights her extraordinary qualifications and the growing acceptance of gender diversity and inclusivity in top positions within India’s railroads.
